Wax Packaging has gained tremendous popularity in the packaging line due to the strength it provides to the packaging containers. It has also been approved by FDA for packaging of food supplies. It is said that wax treatment helps to strengthen the packaging box up to 3 times. The three methods of applying wax on the packaging boxes are:
Coating: The coating process involves applying wax on the surface of the packaging material. The methods used for wax coating are rolling and passing. In rolling, rollers made of metal or rubber and layered with wax are passed over the packaging material and this procedure is referred to as roll coating. Whereas in passing, the packaging material is passed through a curtain of falling wax and the procedure is called curtain coating. The waxes used for coating packaging material are paraffin and microcrystalline.
Laminating: The laminating process involves applying wax between the two packaging sheets or boards that are used for building the packaging boxes. The method used for laminating the packaging material with wax is spraying. In this, molten or powdered wax is sprayed on the packaging material. The wax used for laminating packaging material is microcrystalline as it is cohesive and flexible.
Impregnating: The impregnating process involves infusing the wax into the packaging material. The method used for impregnating is called dipping. In this, the packaging material is soaked into the molten wax. Another method called flushing can also be use for cascading or saturating the packaging material with molten wax. The wax used for impregnating packaging material is paraffin.
The popular waxes that are used for impregnating, laminating or coating packaging material are paraffin, microcrystalline and Fischer-Tropsch. Paraffin wax is generally used for impregnating corrugated boxes as it help to strengthen the boxes and increase their moisture resistance. As corrugated boxes are generally used for packaging food supplies, such as fish, meat, vegetables or fruits; the paraffin wax coating or impregnation helps to retain the aroma and flavor of these food supplies. Wax coated corrugated boxes also help to protect the food supplies from contamination and microorganisms.
